label with a metallic effect is a great way to obtain a premium look and feel for your product. In many industries, competition is at an all-time high, so now more than ever on-shelf appearance is of the utmost importance. Achieving a metallic effect was historically a cumbersome, lengthy, and expensive process – with printers either required to mix special inks or use special equipment to apply a hot or cold foil stamp to the label. This added time and material costs to the job; costs that could only be absorbed through extremely long print runs. As such, metallic effects were out of reach for smaller customers looking for short runs of their labels.

With the advent of digital metal label printing and the ability to print on various metallic substrates like brass, stainless steel or aluminum, we can now easily achieve a metallic effect, even on short runs, without exorbitant time and material costs. Our prepress team can simply apply a metallic effect to your current design, thereby avoiding a rebrand or redesign of current packaging. On the other hand, if you’re not satisfied with your current design, we can assist in creating a design that will really “pop” when applying metallic effects.

How do we do it?

With the help of few features of our Epson SurePress Digital UV Ink label printer, it’s never been easier to create high quality labels with metallic effects. We start by printing on a silver metallic stock. A white ink is used to flood the areas that are not meant to be metallic. This high density white ink now acts like paper, with the other inks printed on top. Where white ink is not present, the silver metallic substrate will show through.  To achieve different coloured metallic labels, we print tints of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink without the white base. Because these inks are semi-transparent, the result is a coloured tint on the silver metallic substrate. The diagram below outlines exactly how it is achieved.
